The ransoming was conducted by Captain Kirhwan as if it were a mock trial, in front of all the passengers and crew, with the Captain officiating as judge and jury. The implications were, that no matter the hardships, “they” should be able to "take it" because of where they were from (West Side, Chicago).īut, the incident that was the most demeaning and abusive was the ransoming of our personal effects that the crew had confiscated when ever and where ever they were found outside of our bunks. No rational explanation was ever given and the crew member was never reprimanded. In another incident, a Deckhand was found rummaging through one of the students belongings, including her undergarments. As punishment, she cancelled an outing to a nearby beach for the next day. ![]() The Captain then suspended all interaction with her crew and ordered all the passengers to go to bed. The matter was presented to Captain Kirhwan, who immediately sided with the 2nd Mate. The incident was so heated that one of our parent chaperones had to intervene. On one afternoon, during our passage through Lake Ontario, the 2nd Mate loudly berated two of our girls for not responding faster to a command. But the atmosphere between the Captain and our group remained tense at best. One of the mates allowed his hair to be French braided and one of the deckhands received a pedicure. And, they were successful in winning over several member of the crew. Our Academy students have been taught to treat others as they would like to be treated, not as they are treated. While I am an avid sailor and sought to be helpful, my curiosity about techniques and equipment were most often met with a grudging single word response or dismissed. The museum’s website claims: "While aboard, you and your guests will be able to participate in raising sail, take a turn at the helm, tack through the wind, learn something new, or simply relax, unwind and sail! " Yet, they were routinely chided in front of the entire group for minor infractions on rules and matters that were totally new to them. Our girls are not delinquents and willingly accepted the ship’s routine. Our group was comprised of fourteen 15 and 16 year old African-American and Hispanic girls entering their freshman year in High School and three adult chaperones, including me. ![]() I was appalled at the captain’s caustic and condescending attitude towards our group throughout our time under her charge.Ĭhicago Hope Academy is a private, nonprofit Christian school located in the heart of West Chicago. I suspect that the Discovery World Museum is not aware of how this vessel is being run by the current Captain, Tiffany Krihwan. ![]() On August 1st, our school group returned from a five day excursion aboard the schooner DENIS SULLIVAN. I will not return until I hear that some changes have been instituted. It was easy to see between the lines that the staff was irritated with the management. I started to numerous employees my concerns and the response was "contact the manager about concerns". The video screens on display were a waste of energy since they went from a main screen to a simple map that could had been displayed on a poster (since there is a WE Energies exhibit regarding saving power - this seemed silly). ![]() The Great Lakes exhibit - smelled badly and most of the buttons did not work. It was obvious that he had been missing from the tank for a while. The lion fish was not in his tank however, there were fishes in the tank that would clearly be bait for him. Buttons didn't work, many video screens were blank, guitars used in exhibits missing strings, etc.Īt the Touch Tank, there was an employee happy to watch the kids however, at the base of the garbage can for drying towels - there was 50+ towels on the floor and the employee didn't care. Spent $45 for admission and many exhibits were not working, signs about the exhibit were missing, employees claimed 'children' were responsible for the damages. Went today with my 12 and 9 year old children.
